Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, a success for application developers
Published by Henrik von Schoultz on February 21, 2010This year in Barcelona was fantastic, Developers everywhere on panels, as keynote speakers and an exhibition hall just for us Hall 7. They even gave away tickets for free to developers (tickets at MWC are ridiculous expensive).
This was the first year in Barcelona that it was clear that the telecom industry is now very much about software. We at MoSync worked hard on the show as speakers, panelist and evangelist on how to do applications for phones. We had our own stand spoke at Mobile premier award, did some panel work on the TechCrunch panel and did a code challenge.
But the best thing we did at MWC was the WIPjam.com. It was crowded with developers.
Caroline, Teresa and Thibaut always makes these events cozy, informal and fun we help out with speakers and session leaders and of course our Tony helps singing on the WIPJam party. This year MoSync, Enough, Oracle, Nokia forum. Qualcomm, Navtech, Ericsson, Getjar, O2, Perfecto Mobile, GSMA help out as sponsors and active participants. Don´t miss the Wip Jam if you go to a show.
So what about the show, any news?
Yes, loads: go surf the net - this blog is just not the place to tell you about it all.
For us some of the most interesting things were:
- Intel and Nokia present MeeGo a new unix operating system based on Moblin and Maemo. MeeGo will be managed by the Limo foundation. MoSync already supports Moblin so expect a MeeGo output to MoSync soon.
- OneAPI, the operator, are ready with an standard API to reach functions inside their networks this is good news and helps a lot when you develop to more than one market.
- Bada, Samsung had a whole team of Bada developers at the show. They also showed the first Bada phone. This is another operating system with good support from Samsung that developers have to take serious when developing apps.
- Windows Mobile 7 - Microsoft showed their new take on mobile and it looks good very robust and with a new nice way to present your personal info on the screen, we all now that Mirosoft is the worlds best second tryer. So be prepared when the deliver windows 7 on phones in Q4.
- Ericsson ESTORE -- This looks like a fantastic cross platform, cross country App store connected to telecoms around the world. MoSync will support ESTORE.
After a week at the show with so much new stuff I have to come back to you on more once my brain has processed it all. :-)
